Luke had his X-wing.
Anakin had whatever unsafe mechanical nightmare he built in a shed.
So if Star Wars: Starfighter leans into that feeling — pilots, rivalries, greasy hangars, dangerous engines, fast escapes, and one ship that everyone says is too risky to fly — then we may be looking at something very fun.
Possibly Star Wars with a little Top Gun energy.

The franchise started as a big-screen adventure. It should celebrate 50 years by giving us another one.

Starfighter is set around five years after The Rise of Skywalker, which is fascinating because that era is still wide open.
The First Order has fallen. The Resistance won. Palpatine exploded again, because apparently one death was not dramatic enough. And now the galaxy has to figure out what comes next.
That gives the movie freedom.
New factions. New problems. And new criminals. New heroes. New ships. Mistakes made by people with very expensive jackets.
This era does not have to be buried under the weight of the old stories. It can build something new while still feeling like Star Wars.
That is the sweet spot.
The Cast Is Loaded

For me, this movie needs three things.
First, it needs fun.
Not corporate fun. Not “please clap” fun. Real adventure fun. Humor, danger, weird aliens, fast ships, and at least one scene where a mechanic says something is impossible right before Kade does it anyway.
Second, it needs heart.
The best Star Wars stories are not about ships. They are about people in ships making terrible emotional decisions at high speed.
Third, it needs identity.
Starfighter cannot just be “Star Wars movie with Ryan Gosling.” It needs its own flavor. Its own rhythm. Its own corner of the galaxy.
If it gives us that, we could have something special.
